CT of Abdomen and Pelvis Overview

Computed tomography, or CT, is a method of imaging the inside of the body. It involves taking a series of images using X-rays, which are then combined by a computer to create a detailed 3D image. During a CT scan, the patient passes through a donut-shaped device relatively quickly.

An older term for a CT scan is a CAT scan, which stands for computed axial tomography. Both terms refer to the same imaging technique, though "CT scan" is now the more commonly used term.

Sometimes, contrast dye is used to make certain structures more visible on a CT scan. In some cases, the dye is administered through an IV. In most people, the kidneys naturally clear the contrast dye from the body within 24 hours. There is also an oral contrast option, where the patient drinks the dye to outline the digestive tract on the scan.

In some situations, it is useful to have CT scans taken both with and without contrast. This process involves first taking images without the contrast dye. After the dye is administered, another set of images of the same tissues is taken. Comparing these two sets of images allows radiologists to better distinguish between different types of tissue.

A multiphase CT scan involves taking several images at different intervals. First, an image is taken without contrast. After contrast is administered through an IV, additional images are captured at two or three different time points. This technique tracks the movement of the dye through the vascular system, helping radiologists identify specific tissue types and assess blood flow.

What does the estimated price include?
Estimated prices include facility fees (charges that cover the overhead costs of running a hospital) and professional fees (charges that cover the costs of services provided by medical professionals like doctors, nurses, or lab technicians).
How does Turquoise determine price accuracy?

Turquoise obtains prices from multiple sources, including provider and insurance published data, as well as historical medical claims.

If you're using insurance...

A price is considered fully verified if it is made available by both the provider and the insurance company, and those prices have low variability. A price is considered partially verified if it is made available by one or the other and can be corroborated by historical medical claims data. Turquoise does not currently publish any rates that don't meet these verification criteria.

If you're not using insurance...

Cash-pay prices can only be retrieved from provider-published data.

I'm using insurance. How do I estimate my out-of-pocket cost vs. what I can expect insurance to cover?
To estimate your out-of-pocket cost, use the calculator tool on the cost breakdown page. We recommend first logging into your insurance portal or contacting them directly to retrieve your up-to-date deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, and service-specific co-pay or co-insurance information.
I enrolled in a government-sponsored healthcare program. Can I use Turquoise to find prices for care?
You should not use Turquoise Health to compare prices if you are enrolled in a Medicare or Medicaid plan. Contact Medicare or your state's Medicaid program directly for more information.
