Procedure Information

What is uterus endoscopy for biopsy or polyp removal?

Uterine polyps are endometrial growths that arise from the inner wall of your uterus and extend into the uterine cavity. Polyps are formed because of the increased growth of the cells that line your uterus. Polyps tend to be noncancerous (benign). However, some polyps can be cancerous.

A uterine polyp can be diagnosed by different methods like transvaginal ultrasound or hysteroscopy (endoscopy). Treatment involves the removal of the polyps by utilizing hysteroscopy.

Why would I get this procedure?

Uterine polyps can lead to a variety of signs and symptoms that make you uncomfortable. They include:

  • Irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Vaginal bleeding after menopause
  • Infertility without a specific reason

If you have any of these symptoms, you should see a doctor.

Although most polyps are noncancerous, they turn into cancer. This is why it is recommended to remove these polyps right away after they have been discovered.

What happens during the procedure?

Polyps are removed by a procedure called hysteroscopy. This procedure usually takes around 30 minutes, depending on the number of polyps you have.

A hysteroscope, a thin, long tube containing a camera and light, is inserted through your vagina and cervix to reach your uterus. You may experience some discomfort as the hysteroscope is passing through your cervix.

Your doctor will be able to see the inside of your uterus using the camera. Delicate surgical instruments are passed along the hysteroscope to cut or burn away the endometrial polyps.

What happens after the procedure?

You will be able to go home soon after the procedure, but you will need to stay for few hours until the anesthesia effect wears off.

It is okay to experience some cramping (similar to period pain) and spotting that can last up to a week or more. You can return to your routine in one to two days. You should follow the instructions your doctor gave you to avoid any complications.

Conclusion

The polyps will be sent to the lab to be analyzed and examined by a pathologist. He/she will determine whether the polyp was benign or malignant and will send a report to your doctor.

Seek medical advice immediately if you have any of the following:

  • pain that isn’t relieved by regular painkillers
  • passing large clots or bright red blood
  • have fever
