Procedure Information

What is drainage of an abscess?

An abscess is a painful, pus-filled bump that forms under your skin when bacteria infects this area and causes inflammation. If this happens to a hair follicle, it is called a boil. The most common bacteria for causing abscesses is called staphylococcus aureus. Areas, where abscesses appear, include the back, neck, armpits, buttocks, thighs, and face.

Why would I get this?

An abscess can heal by itself. However, If it doesn’t heal by itself and is causing pain, then it should be drained by a physician. Consider seeing a doctor if:

  • The abscess is growing rapidly
  • The abscess is causing extreme pain
  • Fever is present
  • Doesn’t heal in two weeks
  • Recurs frequently

What happens during the procedure?

The procedure is straightforward. Your doctor will drain the abscess by making an incision and drain the pus present inside. If the infection is deep and can’t be completely drained, it may be packed with sterile gauze to help soak up and remove the pus. Your doctor will also prescribe some oral or topical antibiotics to help treat recurrent infections.

What to expect after the procedure?

You can go home and resume your regular activities. The abscess will take few days to heal by itself after drainage.
