An evaluation through measurement of fetal nuchal translucency is a prenatal procedure used to assess the risk of certain chromosomal abnormalities and birth defects in the fetus.
This procedure is usually recommended for pregnant women over the age of 35, or for any woman whose prenatal screening tests have indicated a risk for genetic conditions and chromosomal abnormalities.
During the procedure, an ultrasound is performed to measure the thickness of the tissue at the back of the fetus's neck. This measurement is then compared with ultrasound measurements of other parts of the fetus, such as the head and abdomen.
After the procedure, results will be discussed with the mother. If the risk of the baby having a chromosomal abnormality such as Down syndrome, is higher, further testing may be recommended.
