A Fetal Non-Stress Test (NST) is a specialized prenatal diagnostic procedure used to check the health of a baby in-utero. It involves an external fetal monitor that is used to measure the baby's heart rate.
A Fetal NST may be recommended if a pregnant person has risk factors or symptoms that could indicate problems with the baby’s health. These could include complications like gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, or a decreased fetal movement.
During the procedure, an external fetal monitor is attached to the pregnant person's abdomen and detects the baby's heart rate. The monitor may also be used to detect changes in the rate or pattern of the baby’s heartbeat. The patient is asked to recline on the examination table, and then the fetal heart rate is looked at for 20 to 40 minutes.
After the FET, the doctor will review the findings and may order additional tests and ultrasounds if needed. The results should be available within a few days.
