What is an MRI of the spine?

MRI, also known as Magnetic resonance imaging, is a medical imaging technique that uses a combination of a large magnet, radiofrequency, and a computer to produce detailed images of organs and structures within the body like the spine. 

MRI is better than computed tomography (CT) at telling the difference between abnormal and normal soft tissue. This is why an MRI can be used instead of CT in some situations.

Why would I get an MRI?

Doctors may require an MRI to help in the diagnosis of many conditions. MRI can be used to examine the brain or the spinal cord for injuries or the presence of abnormalities, such as: 

1. Degeneration of discs of the spinal cord
2. Multiple sclerosis
3. Tumors
4. Bleeding into the spinal cord or the brain
5. Congenital abnormalities

What happens during an MRI?

You may eat or drink as usual before the procedure. Also, you may require an anti-anxiety medication if you have claustrophobia. 

Before the procedure, you will be asked to remove eyeglasses, jewelry, or other objects that may interfere with the procedure. Moreover, you may be given earplugs to block out any noise from the scanner.

During the procedure, you will lie down on a bed that will slide into the MRI machine. A technologist monitors you from another room, and there will be a microphone to use if you want to talk. The procedure is painless, and you won’t feel anything. It can take anywhere from 15 minutes to more than an hour.

What to expect after an MRI?

If a sedative drug was given, you will need to rest until the sedative effects have worn off. Also, nurses will monitor you for a few hours for any side effects if you were given a contrast dye. You can resume your normal daily activities immediately after the procedure unless your doctor has a different opinion. But, in general, there is no special type of care required after an MRI scan.
