Nasal/sinus endoscopy, surgical, with sphenoidotomy is a procedure that allows doctors to look inside the sinuses and nasal passages via a thin, lighted, flexible tube. It is used to assess the health of the sinus and nasal passages, as well as diagnose certain conditions or diseases related to the nose, sinuses, and upper throat. A sphenoidotomy involves a small surgical opening in the sphenoid sinus, which is located deep in the skull, to improve drainage.
This procedure can be used to diagnose and treat various conditions and diseases such as chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, and tumors of the nose, sinuses, and throat. It can also help in the evaluation and management of conditions such as sleep apnea, allergy, and inflammatory conditions.
The procedure usually begins with the patient being sedated using general or local anesthesia. The doctor will then insert a thin, lighted tube (endoscope) into the nostrils and pass it carefully through the nasal and sinus passages, including the sphenoid sinus. During the procedure, the doctor will examine the sinuses, nasal cavity, pharynx (back of the throat), and nasopharynx (a space behind the nose and above the back of the throat). The doctor may also take samples of tissue and sometimes insert instruments to widen the opening of the sphenoid sinus in order to improve drainage.
After the procedure, it is normal to experience some discomfort, such as a headache or a sore throat. The nasal passages may also be congested, and the patient may have Post-Nasal Drip. Depending on the patient's specific condition, the doctor may recommend the use of medications to help with pain, swelling, and/or congestion.
