Nasal/sinus endoscopy, surgical with ethmoidectomy; partial is a medical procedure that uses an endoscope - a small, thin tube with a light and camera - to see inside the nasal cavity and the surrounding area, such as the sinuses. A partial ethmoidectomy is a type of surgery that involves removing some of the ethmoid sinus, which is the area between the eyes.
This procedure is typically used to diagnose and sometimes treat problems in the nasal area, such as chronic sinus infections, tumors, and other growths. It can also be used to correct a deviated septum or perform an other sinus procedures.
The procedure begins with an anesthetic spray, ointment or injection to numb the area of treatment. Certain instruments are inserted through the nose to remove, repair or take a sample of tissue (biopsy). During the partial ethmoidectomy, some of the ethmoid sinus mucosa, which opens into the nose, is removed. The endoscope is then used to look for any other areas that may need to be treated.
Side effects from this procedure might include nasal congestion or drainage, bleeding or infection. These side effects will typically go away within several weeks after the procedure. You may also experience discomfort, including runny nose, sore throat and facial pain. Your doctor may prescribe medication to reduce pain and inflammation.
