A parathyroidectomy or exploration of parathyroid(s) is a procedure in which a surgeon removes the parathyroid gland or examines it.
The parathyroid gland produces a hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH); it plays an important role in regulating calcium in the body. However, sometimes a person can have a malfunctioning parathyroid gland that causes an imbalance of calcium in the body. Therefore, a parathyroidectomy or exploration of parathyroid(s) may be necessary to correct this imbalance.
During this procedure, a small incision is made in the neck, and a camera and special instruments may be used to observe and extract the parathyroid(s).
After the surgery, you may experience some discomfort and swelling in the neck and a sore throat. You may also experience tiredness, fatigue and a lack of energy; these symptoms should improve over time, though.
