A skin test for tuberculosis is a procedure to check for an active tuberculosis infection in the body. It is also referred to as the tuberculin test, the mantoux test, or the PPD test.
The skin test is usually done when there is risk of being exposed to tuberculosis bacteria or if there are symptoms of a tuberculosis infection. It can also be done as a routine exam, or as a way to review if a person has been infected or exposed to the tuberculosis in the past.
During this procedure, a tiny amount of fluid that contains parts of the tuberculosis bacteria is injected in the skin of your arm. After 48-72 hours, a health care provider will review the spot to determine if a person has had exposure to the tuberculosis bacteria.
After the test is administered, the spot may be swollen and red. This is a normal reaction. If it is swollen and red, this means you have been exposed to the tuberculosis bacteria. A follow-up test may be recommended for further evaluation.
