A surgical hysteroscopy with biopsy is a procedure where a doctor inserts a thin, flexible tube with a camera and a light on the end of it into the uterus through the vagina. The tissue inside the uterus can be examined and, when necessary, a sample of tissue can also be removed.
A surgical hysteroscopy with biopsy may be recommended if a doctor has concerns about the health of the uterus, such as abnormal bleeding, or abnormalities seen on an imaging test. Tissue samples can be collected to be tested in a lab in order to diagnose certain conditions.
Before the procedure, a patient will usually be given a light sedative to relax, and a local anesthetic may also be given to numb the area. Then a thin tube will be inserted through the vagina and into the uterus. Images of the inside of the uterus will be seen on a screen and small samples of tissue can be taken if needed. Hereafter, the hysteroscope will be removed and the patient will be able to go home.
The patient may experience moderate cramping and possibly some light bleeding. A patient should take time to rest after the procedure and avoid strenuous activities for at least 24 hours. If tissue samples were taken, the results may take several days to come back.
