A transrectal ultrasound is a medical imaging procedure in which high-frequency sound waves are transmitted through a transducer (a small device placed inside the rectum) to create images called sonograms of the organs, tissues, and blood vessels inside the body.
A transrectal ultrasound may be performed to diagnose conditions in the prostate, rectal area, or other pelvic organs. It can be used to look for abnormalities, such as masses in these areas, as well as guide biopsies and other procedures.
During the procedure, the transducer is inserted into the rectum and the doctor or technician will perform the ultrasound. A clear, water-based lubricant may be applied to the transducer and a gel may also be used to improve the contact between the skin and transducer. During the ultrasound, images of the pelvic organs will be produced and may also be displayed on a monitor for the doctor or technician to evaluate.
After the procedure the patient may feel some uncomfortable pressure. There may also be minimal rectal bleeding, which can be addressed with warm, moist compresses and sitz baths. Results from the ultrasound may take a few days to come back and should be discussed with the consulting physician.
